TD Niagara Jazz Festival
Recently named ‘Best New Festival in Ontario’ the TD Niagara Jazz Festival is an exciting jazz festival dedicated to celebrating the art form of jazz in the Niagara Region. The Festival inspires, educates & develops future jazz audiences for generations to come while combining live jazz with a Niagara experience – food, wine, culture & natural wonders.
The festival was created and is run by Niagara based jazz artists Juliet Dunn (Executive Director & Artistic Producer / Jazz Vocalist)) and her husband Peter Shea (Artistic Consultant / Jazz Drummer, Vocalist & Pianist.) The duo have been growing the jazz scene In Niagara together since 2006 and with their jazz series (twilightjazz.ca) since 2011.
The festival runs events all throughout the calendar year from ‘the Music of a Charlie Brown Xmas’ at the FirstOntario Performing Arts centre (over the holidays) to their Twilight Piano Jazz Series, and LIVE LEARN JAZZ events held in wineries and breweries around the Niagara region starting in April. In 2018 the festival expands to 2 weekends. The first weekend takes place on Thursday, July 19th with an Exhibit at the NAC (Niagara Artists Centre), ‘Jazz in the Clubs’ at Mahtay Café and Lounge on Friday, July 20th and then ‘World Music on the Beach’ on Sunday, July 22nd at Lakeside Park in Port Dalhousie.
The 2nd weekend will take place on Friday, July 27th with ‘Jazz in the City’ at the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre featuring Jim John’s Swing Shift Big Band and vocalist Christopher Alan Graves, and then ‘Jazz in the Clubs’ with a VIP after party and Jazz Jam at Mahtay Café and Lounge (in St. Catharines). Saturday, July 28th and Sunday, July 29th takes place in historic Niagara-on-the-Lake with ‘Jazz in the Park’ featuring a plethora of jazz ensembles (Denielle Bassels, Duncan Hopkins, John Neudorf, Sara Jerrom and many more). ‘Soul Jazz in the Vineyard’ will also be featured at the Hare Wine Co. on the evening of Saturday, July 28th.
