November 2, 2019, 7:30 pm Partridge Hall, FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre , St.Catharines .

Chorus Niagara premieres A CHILD OF OUR TIME, by British Composer Sir Michael Tippett

This powerful contemporary oratorio was composed in 1941 in response to the events of Kristallnacht Described by BBC Music Magazine as "one of the great seminal works that define the spirit of the 20th century", Tippett’s work remains a compelling call for unity in a divided world. Drawing inspiration from African-American spirituals Nobody Knows the Trouble I've SeenSteal AwayDeep River and others, the 100+ voices of CHORUS NIAGARA, full orchestra, and international soloists perform this magnificent masterwork one night only in Partridge Hall, FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre   , St. Catharines. This concert marks the beginning of Artistic Director Robert Cooper's 30th Anniversary with Chorus Niagara and our 57th concert season.

Chorus Niagara is joined by:

Niagara Symphony Orchestra. A cultural treasure for seven decades, the NSO is a professional orchestra of over 50 musicians providing classical and contemporary orchestral music to residents of the Niagara Region.

International Soloists

Johane Ansell, soprano. Described as 'possessing a voice of body, clarity, showing great maturity of phrasing and musicality' in the press. Johane is Canadian and now makes her home in the UK. It thrills us to have Johane joining us again for this performance.

Lauren Segal, mezzo-soprano. Critics praise her tone for its “gleaming, luscious timbre ” (La Scena Musicale) and her operatic interpretations as “ absolutely sensational” ( Paula Citron ), “spectacular” (The Toronto Star) and “alluring, sexy, her voice rich in nuance” (Opera Magazine).

Andrew Haji, tenor. The Canadian tenor is quickly becoming one of the most sought-after voices on both the operatic and concert stages. “Haji has a glorious tenor, bright, clarion, sweet, rich, always used with musicality and discerning taste. To sum it up in a few words, his singing was marvell ous .” (  La Scena Musicale)

James Westman, baritone. Whether performing song, concert or opera throughout the world, baritone James Westman’s passion and musicianship bring an extra dimension to his performances. “Internationally acclaimed Canadian baritone James Westman acts as impressively as he sings, stealing the show.” (London, England Financial Times)
